Why Elvis King...
To paraphrase John Lennon "Before Elvis there was nothing"; well as Elvis alluded to in his 68 comeback special; essentially his music emanated from gospel and rhythm and blues, he harnassed it in a way no one ever had or will do again. Elvis was King for his indelible effect on generations of true music lovers, his ability to capture the true essence and soul of a song and through his voice(that no superlatives could be describe-so wont try) share with the world.I am influenced and entertained just as much now by Elvis as I was as that young kid of 8 who wanted to listen to Elvis all day. His imperial reign of the music kingdom will never end; and no doubt Elvis will have the enduring effect on my grandkids as he had on me; thats why Elvis is and always will be the King.

The 1968 Comeback Special ... forty years on, still Special.
June 3rd 1968, a date palpable in the mind of every Elvis fan, as it marked history in both the music industry and the career of Elvis Presley. While it marked his momentous resurrection into the entertainment world, its primary objective to return Elvis Presley to the music arena following almost a decade of absence in commitment to military drafting and contractual obligations at Hollywood.
Although still contracted until 1969, June 3rd would be the first recording day for Elvis' now dubbed "Comeback Special", but then an intended NBC Special for official release in December of that year, with a Christmas theme.
At a time when the later sixties brought so much cultural change, so did the then perception of music tastes. Beetles mania was under way and they were being received as the next crazes of American music taste. Being compared as "four Elvis Presleys". Other groups such as more home grown The Doors or Jimi Hendrix further fruited the appetite for difference. Not to mention the rebellious Woodstock gatherings... Was Elvis Presley's music dated?
It is common knowledge that Elvis was tiring of the much routine scripts presented that he was contractually obliged to. With his movie accomplishments now in double digits, this was clearly evident on screen too. Movies were lacking which was distressing, considering his earlier evident acting capabilities in the first few movies completed. My online movie poll confirming mutual favouritisms and less favouritism in his later titles. Some drastic was needed. And so came the idea of the 1968 NBC Christmas Special...
Although initially no one could possibly know the actual direction the show would take, the Colonel and producers were intent of setting a complete Christmas theme. The show to be set in an intimate setting with Elvis performing Christmas numbers, as fitting for the early December airing. The finale expected as an iconic Christmas title. However, Elvis had different ideas. While he could have only been too aware of his then minimal presence in acclaimed music releases of the later sixties, he had become arguably type cast as a singing actor in bad movies. With almost all music releases being soundtrack albums, whether loved by the most dedicated fans, they were less competitive to the lively comparisons of the time nor representative of the works he was capable of.
Elvis had different ambitions of the special. It was to be his first performance in front of a live audience in a decade. Nervous, quite rightly so, but it was to be his chance to show the public that he never lost his musical talent. While the song repertoire had to be paramount, so too did his appearance. The obvious change being Elvis the entertaining musician and not the stereotyped characters that were all too familiar. The special's producer, Steve Binder, decided his former colleague, Bill Belew, be right for the job as costume designer. And so he and Elvis set about designing the many costumes to feature in theme with the selected performances. As the preparations got underway, it was clear to any observer, that this special would not be overly remenesent of a Christmas theme. The shows theme was Elvis!
Bill Belew worked with Elvis' enthusiasm in designing the selected costumes. Most notably remembered was his Black Leather suit, probably the design template for many jumpsuits to come, the idea was to resemeble Elvis' humble beginnings of a country boy. Leathered dungaree styling as drafted from Elvis' presentation of denim dungarees to Belew, was contrary to his teenage dressing. Another performing highlight included Elvis to wear as gold suit as credit to the songs theme of final destination, however, as Elvis' had reservations from his previous gold lame suit, he would only wear the coat. The grand finale would see Elvis wearing a now dubbed gospel number, although likely a self seeking destined ambitious clothing at the time... Final result, Elvis' stereotypical movie castings were broken...

ALOHA REMEMBERED...
January 9th 1973, Elvis arrives in Honolulu for rehearsal. The infamous landing as included in the Aloha From Hawaii concert, recording his arrival to a much welcomed audience. Over the coming days, the rehearsals would begin and mark this iconic moment in Elvis' career and broadcasting history. January 10th is designated for a day's rehearsal. On January 12th, 6000 fans are invited to witness the final dress rehearsal with formal recordings in audio and motion picture, to be what was, the Alternative Aloha. This recording being destined as a reserve should the live broadcast experience difficulties. After the recording, Elvis watched the tapes over and over, and decided he did not like his hair, which can be seen changed on the later recording. January 13th was declared Elvis Presley Day by Honolulu's mayor.
January 14 1973, the day arrives, at 12.30am, Glenn Hardin and his grand piano introduces the Also Sprach Zarathustra with Joe Guercio mighty Bom Bom Bom Bom Bom Bom Bom... Elvis steps out on stage at the International Convention Center Arena, with to produce Marty Pasetta's seven recording cameras. Elvis is broadcast in the first live satellite broadcast to the Far East, and later tape delay to 28 other European Nations. Later on April 28th to be shown to the American Public. Elvis in arguably his most prolific time in his career, was in top form. His weight having decreased from the previous years Elvis On Tour capturings, an estimated one billion people, (a third of the worlds population), tuned in. Elvis recording regular features as See See Rider, Burning Love, and Suspicious Minds among others. Most notably was his versions of You Gave Me A mountain, Something, My Way and An American Trilogy, previous recordings... Such rarities on the night included Welcome To My World and the shows beneficiary fund's song, I'll Remember You, a future anthem in tribute in many shows and documentaries post his death. Elvis was in top form and it showed. The on screen camaraderie between him and his crew, obvious. The ritual water throwing over Glenn Hardin, to his powerful satisfaction during the brass build up of Trilogy. This was also evident in his continued pleasure in pleasing his fans... His belt throwing and cape to lucky audience members, what a treat. The show being broadcast to raise funds for the Kui Lee cancer fund... Audience goers being requested to make any donations as fee for their entry ticket. From some cents to dollars, the $25000 target was far exceeded to $75000. Of the thousands of audience members present, Elvis introduces one of his favourite actors. Hawaii Five-O's Jack Lord. Lord gaining entry to Elvis' dressing room after the show, and politely inviting Elvis to his house during his stay at Hawaii. A few days later, he to arrive with entire crew...
After the show had ended and the audience cleared, at near 4am in the morning, Elvis returns to the stage for filming of Blue Hawaii, Ku-U-I-Po, No More, Hawaiian Wedding Song and Gordon Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain. These songs to be used as post inserts for its future airing on TV, with upper body shots of Elvis amid Hawaii scenery. The absence of his belt being one reason for upper body shots.
Positive reviews of the receipt of the live broadcast was evident. Record viewing across the world were recorded. It being the highest viewed programme in TV history in Japan, and on its eventual airing in the US in April, more people tuned in then had watched the landing on the moon. "We're gonna make super magic for the tube, and we'll do it together.", Elvis telling producer Marty Pasetta. And they did just that!
Having been fortunate to meet Elvis' confident Charlie Hodge, who was there that night, I can recall a recollection of his... After the show, and everyone was in their dressing rooms, Charlie received a call. It was Elvis. He asks Charlie, do you know what two small country boys have done, we have entertained the world. How true Elvis was, he had entertained the world that night!

ALOHA FROM NEW ZEALAND...
Folks, John Newman, pictured above during his radio tribute programme on a previous Elvis' anniversary sent me his story of how it all started... As we all have one, why not send yours today... Read John's story below...
Hi Darren,
It was good to hear from you. I guess I became an Elvis fan way back when I was 11 years old. My sister played the piano and one day she came home with some new sheet music and played it on the piano. The song was Teddy Bear (from Loving You). I liked the tune and was soon listening to the song on the radio and of course it was Elvis Presley. I saved up my pocket money and then went out and bought the RCA 78 of Teddy Bear. That was the start of me collecting Elvis' music. A few months later a double feature of Loving You and King Creole was screening at one of our city cinemas, I took a sicky day off school and talked my mum to take me to the pictures to see Elvis and that's what happened.
Over the years I collected all of Elvis' records from 78's, then 45's, EP's and LP's. I never let my sister take these to parties and because of that I still have every record that has been released in New Zealand. I have several hundred CD's and all of his movies on DVD, Video and 16mm film plus many more documentaries. I have many books on Elvis and many Elvis film posters. I worked in cinemas for 18 years and that was handy for collecting the posters and stills and also worked on radio for 13 years where I played Elvis when ever I got a chance. I have a full size statue of Elvis standing in our lounge holding a guitar. My wife likes Elvis, but she is a Cliff Richard fan. Well Darren thats about it, hope you can get something from that lot. Keep in touch. John. tcb

The Appeal Of Elvis Presley To A 15 Year Old Fan...
Elvis Presley... a name known by so many millions of people worldwide. With his legions of fans across the globe he changed the face of the music world forever and had an extraordinary effect on his generation and the many generations to follow, criticized at first he won the hearts even of the strictest in society. Furthermore, even thirty years after his untimely passing he is still touching more people and inspiring upcoming artists. From the poor boy in Tupelo, to the outcast in Memphis, to the beloved star he is today. So what does he mean to a fifteen year old fan? That I can never properly answer, all I can say is he is my everything, without him I don't know where I'd be today. Elvis has given everything; because of him I have met the most amazing people and made the best friends I have ever had. Some who are more like family. Although many people my age are against my music, Elvis is worth putting up with them for! This is my Elvis story, a view of the king, through my eyes.
The first time I heard the voice was at a line dancing class, the song, Burning Love. Mum explained that the singer was Elvis Presley. The next few years Elvis wasn't really a major influence, sure I knew who he was and I liked him but it was nothing big. Then out of the blue I just started liking him, think it might be because my parents had a copy of 30 number 1 hits. For my 10th birthday I was given a copy of 2nd to None and ever since I've grown to love him more everyday.
Before moving to Australia O finally got to see his face when I was given a book on him as a goodbye present, this is when my Elvis knowledge started.
When we moved to Australia I found out that he was in 33 movies and the first one I saw was ?King Creole". After seeing it I became a ?real ?fan. I started reading every Elvis book I could, taking notes all the while. This ended up with me attempting to write a book of my own. Attempting being the key word!
October 12, 2006 was the best night of my life; I went to see Elvis in Concert. It was amazing. I'd never met or even seen another fan in the flesh and there I was with hundreds of them. I said to my Mum when we walked through the door "I'm home". A few of the jumpsuits were on display which was unreal, standing in front, seeing something my hero saw and wore. Indescribable. In the show were members of the original TCB Band it was such a thrill to be in the same room.
Just months later, for my birthday, I made the best decision of my whole life. I joined the TCB Elvis Presley Fan Club of Queensland Australia. This was just the beginning, when I really was brought into the ?Elvis World' I was brought into the ?Elvis Family'. One thing I'm still getting used to though is being able to talk about Elvis without getting told off! It's great talking to people who know as much as I do.
I owe everything to president, Christine Bamford, who I love with all my heart and well she knows it! She, after bringing me into the Elvis world introduced me to the world of ETA's. My first show was performed by an amazing guy called Gabe Phoenix who is an up and coming star. When I saw him for the first time it was brilliant, his voice, it's uncanny. ETA's are the closest I will ever get to seeing Elvis which doesn't bother me as much as I would love to have seen him but the ETA's all do a great job. Like Gabe most ETA's actually do a tribute show and when Gabe is up there on stage the love he has for the man is obvious and that's what makes his show so great.
Many fans older than me worry that when Elvis' friends, family and band pass on and all the first hand fans are no longer around, will Elvis' legacy still be. Well I believe that it will and I hope it goes on forever because this man is in my opinion the second greatest man to walk this earth. He has brought so many people together and I thank him immensely for that. It is obvious that Elvis is and always will be The King of Rock'n'Roll.

Long Lonely Highway...
As we marked the thirtieth anniversary of Elvis ' untimely death this year, I decided to do a little searching on the world wide web on an article I had encountered previously . Rewinding the clock back to August 18th 1977, the world's eyes watched through global media that captive moment in time of an entourage of white Cadillac limousines following the final chauffer driven journey of the King. A white Miller-Meteor Landau Traditional Cadillac was on approach to the Memphis Cemetery, bringing us to realisation that Elvis Presley was really dead.
It was this footage, that intrigued my curiosity. Where was this car now?
Having read an article written by an alledged employee of the funeral company, I was eager to investigate. In the early 1980's, the funeral directors responsible for arranging Elvis' funeral, decided to update their current stock. They returned the vehicle to the original sales company that had sold the vehicle. A company specialised in the selling, fitting, sales and servicing of such vehicles. After the car was returned, and having been stood idol for a long period in their car lot, in 1984, a request was made by a trading company for the requirement of a white funeral hearse by a funeral director in Florida, USA. Elvis' hearse being the only such vehicle, lying idol on site, available at the time. After the company's founder considered its release to loan, having realised the historic importance of the vehicle, he decided to honour his associates request, with reluctance. It was decided his son and his friend were to deliver the vehicle to its loaned address.
While on route and without checking for gas, the hearse, unexpectedly rang out of fuel on the highway. After parking the hearse off on the narrow margin, and walking two miles to the nearest service station, they got a top up, enough to get the hearse to it for a refuel. However, while driving the car in the direction of the service station, the engine cut out, its driver immediately entering the car into neutral and turning the ignition. In doing so, flames arose from the engine, and immediately they decided to pull over and jump out. In reminiscence of the scene from Trains Planes and Automobiles with John Candy and Steve Martin, its driver and friend were standing at the rear of vehicle as it engulfed. The hearse was no more but a burning shell, the number seven, being the only numeric identifiable from the registration plate as it consequently surrendered to the crusher.
In the current climate, with such advances in the monetary and economic climate, and popular tools such as the internet and eBay, one can only imagine, the then, and present importance of such a vehicle. The current wreck of the Mercedes Limousine carrying Princess Diana on her last journey, considered as valued at £1 million sterling. One cannot consider the irony surrounding this story. Elvis, of course, having the last fiscal gain, with the cheeky final remeninence of a numeric seven. Elvis' hearse had left the highway, but his journey continues ...

How Great Thou Art, We Shall Have Acclamation . . .
Over the weekend, I was watching an unofficial release of outtakes taken from the 1972 documentary, Elvis On Tour. Such rarities and outtakes included on the disc, not included in the then original release, was a beautiful live version of Elvis performing How Great Thou Art. The musical chemistry between him and his backing group was just amazing. I could not help but raise the hairs on my neck to hear this performance, some thirty five years old, as powerful today as was when recorded. To have witnessed it live, a total treat and far more captivating then my dodgy bootleg. Yet, I listened and watched with acclamation. To see Elvis, slightly heavier then his Aloha performance, to follow some months later, performing in his beautiful Stud and Nail Ice Blue Suit, with ruffled hair, signing his heart out with a powerful song as How Great Thou Art, only he could perfect it. Other outtakes included an informal chat/interview with Elvis and the filming crew, talking informally about his music, and a complete recording of Always On My Mind. Such scenes likening to a Pandora's Box of footage to any fan. Some never before seen or heard in their entirety.
As a fan of How Great Thou Art, I could not help returning to other versions of the song, on various other albums I have. The powerful and dramatic recording on the Live On Stage In Memphis album, 1975, to the historic versions from the final concerts of the Spring Tours 77 album and Elvis In Concert album. Could I choose a favourite? To simply answer, No. As I have stated before, Its almost impossible to choose a favourite song, let alone version of recording, each being unique. To favour, it's impossible, I think best to say, its dependable on the mood you are in at the time.
Bringing me back to the 1972 version I watched, I could not help think, that to listen to this dramatic, religiously powerful song, sung by a heart pouring performer, only he could pull it off. Thirty five years on, I was moved. I could not help but consider, its justification to How Great He Is of an entertainer, that an Elvis entitled caption, How Great Thou Art, truly fitting. With the performance leaving a visual memory in my mind of the professionalism of his work, it was coincidence that I came across the above photograph. Elvis on stage at the Memphian Coliseum, doing as he did best, performing, pouring his heart out to the ever wanting fans, acknowledging their never ending loyalty. A man with no visual effects, stage gimmicks, but only him and his loyal musicians, making history. A humanistic performer that he was. It was then that I thought the caption truly fitting to this image, Elvis. How Great Thou Art...

How The Web Has Woven.
While recently listening to How The Web Was Woven from That's The Way It Is, I thought it a fitting theme to my next article. Elvis on the World Wide Web. The world wide web having originally been designed for use in the 1950's by the American Defence Forces, was introduced in the mid nineties for personal and commercial use with obvious success. While one can effectively live from online without leaving ones house, it was no doubt inevitable that it would become a media to host large volumes of Elvis content. Some official, unofficial and in both good and bad taste. The other day as this site went live on Google, I typed a search using "Elvis" and 54 million links were determined in less than ten seconds. Wow. As I always wanted to be involved in an Elvis organisation, I always intended to throw my hand at something Elvis early on. With a reputable Fan Club in existence, I decided to focus my attention online. I was surprised in the low number of Irish dedicated sites in existence, as many had not been updated. With only one major site, www.elvis.ie in existence, updating daily, I thought there was further scope for my idea. Hence www.elvisonline.org with the intention of working with my cyber colleagues in the preservation of the memory and legacy of Elvis Presley.
With the Internet being in daily use, it is an easy media at getting in touch and communicating with people around the world. On Wednesday, I was talking with another fan from Hawaii. All from the comfort of my armchair! This said, I intend to meet and liase with other clubs around the world, and gain their perspective with introductions to the Irish fans. In the sites first week to date, I have had over a hundred visitors and four hundred pages viewed. So while the web continues to be woven, perhaps elvisonline.org can contribute in weaving it, as we all share our interest and enjoyment of Elvis, his music and career.

Always On Our Mind.
In keeping with last issues' theme, I have decided to continue this issues Elvis On The Net with consideration of the approach to the 30th Anniversary of his passing. It is ten years this August that I became an Elvis fan at the age of fourteen, having taped This Is Elvis for my father. Repeated viewing that day, and staying up until 8am the following morning had me hooked. I was under his influential spell. In the years that followed, I have built my collection with almost anything and everything possible. During that time, I was always aware of the stereotypical Elvis jokes associated with being a dedicated fan. Those who mimic The King being alive, in a different sense to the still popularity of his music presence today. Endless sightings of Elvis from working in a fast food restaurant to performing in September ?77 at an Elvis Impersonators Competition and coming second! I guess being aware of such allegations lead me to sourcing the 1980's video, The Elvis Files, and purchasing it in book form.
While the world woke on that fateful day, the global audience, weather fans or not, could not believe the news that awaited them. Rock Idol Elvis Presley Dies At 42 (Washington Post), King Elvis Dead (The Sun). The sightings began instantaneously, and would continue for the next thirty years to come.
While the Internet is still a relatively new technological innovation, it is a welcoming host for sightings to be reported and discussed from the conspiracy theorists to hopeful fans. A typical search on Google for possible Elvis Sightings yields 433,000 in 0.5 seconds. His physical presence being apparently felt. In one such search I came across a particular website specialising and recording Elvis Sightings from around the globe. The primary objective being for fans to track his current whereabouts, so as they are not shocked when bumping into him at their local shop or seeing him walking in the street. Dedicated websites updated daily by conspiracy theorists can be found with a sole objective to prove that Elvis is still alive today.
On my searches, I came across a dedicated fan club, allegedly official, that dedicates themselves in providing the truth about Elvis hoaxing his own death. Based on alleged facts publicly shared that he was a federal agent now in a witness protection programme, the incorrect spelling of his name on his grave stone, the picture of his corpse, they go on.
While the majority of fans consider such suggestions ludicrous, the fact of their presence today cannot be ignored. Their contribution to Elvis' continued presence in the public mind, weather positive or negative, being evident. Clearly seen from any search engine on the world wide web. I would consider such Elvis Sightings counterfeit. However, realise the genuine hopeful fans persistence in wishing he was still with us physically today, and not just his acclaimed musical presence which needs no detailing. Their hopes being accredited to his influence on them.
While I have my own sceptical views on his death, which I wont detail in this article, I do believe his presence is alive in his music today. The pending weekly release of The Greatest Singles Ever to the charts, and the current Elvis Lives Concert being Number 6 of Top Music Videos in the US Charts as of July 14th. As in lasts months issue, detailed by my friend Ollie Berry, further releases await us. Also, in the Irish Elvis scene, one can see the yearly growth in the number of gigs and shows around the city, on the lead up to each years anniversary. One is proud to be an Elvis fan.
After considering my findings online, I still feel inquisitive. Ones conclusions being their own. However, one common conclusion that we all can acknowledge is that his success is ever growing, with the new arrival of fans on the scene, younger than me! I think one can safely say that he will be equally present on his fiftieth anniversary if not more. He is Always On Our Mind.

Blue Hawaii Remembered... (C) EPE (image)
Hawaii was always held close within Elvis' heart as a beautiful place. The picturesque scenery and landscaping played host for many Elvis occasions including personal but many pinnacle professional mild stones.
Among these, Hawaii saw Elvis' fundraising benefit, of which proceeds went to the construction of the memorial to the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbour in March 1961. He was again welcomed back in November 1972 to Honolulu touring and with promotion of the scheduled recording of Aloha From Hawaii on January 13th and 14th 1973, and would be his final vacational destination in the Spring of 1977. Hawaii of course is always remembered as the setting of Elvis' eight motion picture, Blue Hawaii, filmed on location in 1961, produced by Hal Wallis and co starring Joan Blackman and Nancy Walters.
With on location filming included on the grounds of the then less famous Coco Palms Hotel, its enevitable fame was secured. Originally opened on January 25, 1953, the Coco Palms Resort had 24 rooms, two guests and four employees. The Resort grew to contain 416 rooms by the mid-1970s and boasted of its famous 2,000-tree coconut grove, being the largest of only three similar groves in the entire state of Hawaii, originally planted with coconut tree nuts imported from Samoa by Mr. William Lindeman in 1896. . However by 1984, the number of rooms had been reduced to 393. In August of 1985, the resort was sold on to new owners and continued its operations until the early 1990s when tragedy struck.
Hurricane Iniki struck the resort September 1992, the Coco Palms was shut down indefinitely as repairs proved too costly and the entire island struggled with recession. The property, located on the southeast shore of Kaua`i, has been left to decay now for over a decade to this current day.
Online photographic evidence shows of its sad condition, faint remnants of what it once was. No longer can one identify the beautiful on screen imagery as portrayed from the scenes of Blue Hawaii filmed on its location. While there are remnants of its by gone beauty, one can imagine how it once was. While there is currently hopes of the resort being resurrected in early 2008, it remains fenced off from the outside world. The fencing to prevent trespassers, but also for the safety of the willing fans who make the pilgrimage to this famous setting for that photo opportunity and real life experience of being there, where Elvis was. Be warned however, it no longer looks as it did in Blue Hawaii!
The area surrounding the resort continues to host the many Blue Hawaii themed weddings, and Elvis' presence continues on. It is not wonder he sung of ... Blue Hawaii... With all this loveliness...

COMING SOON, ELVISONLINE REVIEWS ...
THE LOVE SONGS
Always a true romantic, Elvis recorded many, many love songs throughout his career, beginning with "I Want You I Need You I Love You" in 1956 and running the entire span of his life. Entire eras of his remarkable life and career can be evoked by the mere mention of the title of one of his many love songs. Mention "Love Me Tender" and a hundred images spring to mind. The same can be said for his many other songs of romance. Elvis and his love songs had remained an unexplored area of Elvis' remarkable career. Now,"Love Me Tender. The Love Songs Of Elvis Presley" tells the warm story of the tender side of the King of Rock and Roll. Narrated by Ashley Judd, "Love Me Tender" is Elvis as you've never seen him.

NOV: ALERT!!!
Elvis, No 1 Dead Celebrity Earner 2008
 |
|
The American magazine Forbes just published it's yearly
list of top earning dead celebrities. Elvis is still the number
one in this list with a whopping $52 million. That is more
than some of today's active entertainers. For example,
Madonna earned $40 million. Famous legends as Marilyn
Monroe and James Dean are among the steady names in
the list. New arrivals are actors that just passed away:
Heath Ledger and Paul Newman. Two years ago, Elvis lost
the number 1 position to Kurt Cobain, who's catalogue was
sold in 2006. His name does not appear on the list anymore.
