Fellow member, Frank Byrne tells us how he became an Elvis fan, and shares with us, some of his collection...

How I became an Elvis Fan and my Elvis collection.

I became an Elvis Fan in August 1977 when Elvis passed away. I remember the news on the T.V when they said that The Rock and Roll Singer Elvis Presley had passed away in his Mansion, Graceland. For some silly reason I felt as if I had lost someone. The next day I went into work and a friend of mine who I worked with seemed very sad about something so I asked him if everything was alright and he said to me that The King Is Dead. He had tears in his eyes when he said it....I said what King.....He said Elvis Presley....This friend was a truck driver and I was sent out with him on some deliveries. He had a tape recorded and I listened to Elvis all day long...That weekend I bought my first Elvis Long Play Record. Little did I know that this was the start of something that was going to get bigger and bigger as the years went by.

I did not grow up with Elvis but I did grow up with the music of the 50's, Rock and Roll, as we had no television back then so there was only radio. My brothers who are older than me were Teddy Boys back then I loved the Teddy Boy suits and the suede shoes and I wanted to be like them when I grew up, but it never happened and along came the 60's Mersey Beat. The Rolling Stones. The Beatles. No more Rock and Roll as it was all mods and rockers, so I became a mod. I don't remember much about Elvis then but I had heard him on the radio and saw one or two of his films. I still have my records of the 60's and good memories of that time.

After the 60's I was not much into the music any more as times and music had changed......Then in August 1977 I got hooked on Elvis Presley. I had a lot of catching up to do on his music, films, books, videos....I have met lots of people because I am a Elvis Fan. I joined a few Elvis Fan Clubs but found out that they were not all they were cracked up to be. For a few years I was just an Elvis Fan trying to collect anything I could find on Elvis. I started getting items from England, Belfast and the U.S., records both long play and extended play, singles. No CDs or DVDs back then. Every Saturday I would search the second hand record and book shops looking for anything.

I joined a few Elvis fan clubs but was not happy with them so in 1997 I was asked by some friends to start up another Elvis Club...I wrote to Graceland and asked if it was possible to start up a Fan Club...Graceland gave me the all clear to run my own club. We called it the Elvis And Friends Rock And Roll Club. We opened up in Graingers Pub in Talbot Street. All we had then was a 3in1 Hi-Fi and an old video player plus a Television. The Club was opened by The Glen Lee Sounds, Glen better known to Radio Beaumont listeners for his Elvis Hour. We met John Coates there as well..

The club was going well but it lacked something. The people who I had with me at the time were not really into running a club so I decided to close it down and move onto something different. We took on a New Name The Inner Circle Of Elvis and Friends. We started doing Fundraising and Charity work to include People in Need and other things. For our work with People In Need we got invited to appear on the Late Late Show with Gay Byrne....I do miss the club but I find that it is hard to get the support of the Irish Elvis fans......There are 3 listed Elvis Fan Clubs listed with Graceland...At this time there is only one Elvis Club Running...I have met lots of people involved with Elvis Like Charlie Hodge Elvis' Backing group...Bill Black. The Jordanairs, David Stanley..

I have met lots of Elvis Impersonators like Curtis King, Emerald Elvis, Derek McEvoy the list goes on and on. I got to know George Twamley, leader of The Official Elvis Presley Fan Club Of Ireland. I worked with George and I am proud to call him my Friend...George has moved on to better things...including his, My Boy Elvis. What is left of the fan clubs, well it is up to the fans to decide. In the mean time my Elvis Collection has grown and I hope to keep on Collecting. To me and many more people Elvis Never Died.....He Just Left The Building......T.C.B....Frank Byrne

THE LOVE SONGS

Always a true romantic, Elvis recorded many, many love songs throughout his career, beginning with "I Want You I Need You I Love You" in 1956 and running the entire span of his life. Entire eras of his remarkable life and career can be evoked by the mere mention of the title of one of his many love songs. Mention "Love Me Tender" and a hundred images spring to mind. The same can be said for his many other songs of romance. Elvis and his love songs had remained an unexplored area of Elvis' remarkable career. Now,"Love Me Tender. The Love Songs Of Elvis Presley" tells the warm story of the tender side of the King of Rock and Roll. Narrated by Ashley Judd, "Love Me Tender" is Elvis as you've never seen him.

NOV: ALERT!!!

Elvis, No 1 Dead Celebrity Earner 2008

ElvisMatters

The American magazine Forbes just published it's yearly
list of top earning dead celebrities. Elvis is still the number
one in this list with a whopping $52 million. That is more
than some of today's active entertainers. For example,
Madonna earned $40 million. Famous legends as Marilyn
Monroe and James Dean are among the steady names in
the list. New arrivals are actors that just passed away:
Heath Ledger and Paul Newman. Two years ago, Elvis lost
the number 1 position to Kurt Cobain, who's catalogue was
sold in 2006. His name does not appear on the list anymore.

Courtessey: ElvisMatters
What is your opinion of Elvis songs remixed, such as the latest 2008 remix of Baby Let's Play House?
I dislike thinking they spoil the original and Elvis' originality.
I think they are fantastic and contribute to his continued legacy.

What do you think of the scheduled Elvis duets Christmas album to be released?
I think it is a fantastic idea and welcome Elvis' work remixed...
I totally disagree with it and messes with Elvis' original work, something he was strongely against...

What is your opinion of EPE's latest statement and speculated expansion intentions?
I think it will commercialise Elvis too much and loose his original appeal.
I think it is great and promote his name in the music industry and to future generations.

Do you think the CBS Special of 1977 should be released as a Special Edition ?
 Yes
 No

Should FTD go down the road of DVD releases?
 Yes
 No

What is your opinion of Elvis Tribute Artists?
They are excellent and a credit to the continued preservation of Elvis' legacy.
I dislike Elvis Tribute Artists and think that they do nothing, if not tarnish, his legacy.
